Question 1

How long does the process take from first appointment to surgery?

Accepted Answer

It varies with your individual assessment, test results and hospital availability. Several weeks to a few months is common, because thorough preparation is an important part of safe surgical care. Your team will give you a realistic timeline once your assessment is complete.

Question 2

Is weight loss surgery performed in Cairns, or will I need to travel?

Accepted Answer

Consultations are held in Cairns City and surgery is performed in a Cairns hospital, with follow-up locally. If you live elsewhere in Far North Queensland, telehealth may be suitable for some appointments.

Question 3

Do I have to decide on surgery at my first consultation?

Accepted Answer

No. The first consultation is about understanding your situation and options. Any decision about surgery is made only after a full assessment and a detailed discussion of risks, benefits and alternatives.

Question 4

What if I am assessed and surgery is not recommended?

Accepted Answer

Surgery is not suitable for everyone. If it is not recommended, or you decide against it, our GP-led medical weight loss pathway is available and the two teams continue to work together on your care.

Question 5

Will I keep seeing the team after surgery?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Structured follow-up with the surgical and medical teams is part of the pathway, not an optional extra, and continues over the longer term.
